Trout in the Classroom eggs delivered

Eggs for the 2014-15 Trout in the Classroom program have been delivered by Nutmeg TU volunteers.

Nutmeg TU TIC coordinator Dave Edgeworth reports that Trout In the Classroom had a very successful trout egg delivery day on Nov 18. Teachers and students were very excited to receive their eggs.

Several volunteers were on hand to make the drop-off to 16 schools across the Nutmeg Chapter region. Many thanks to our President Chuck Petruccelli, Joseph Lanese, and Gian Morresi for the time and effort on a cold and windy morning.

Every school received 200 brown trout eggs which will hatch, grow, and be released into local rivers in May.

Nutmeg barbeque canceled

The Nutmeg TU Barbeque scheduled for June 28 has been canceled.

The following letter is being emailed to members:

Hi TU Nutmeggers,

Because of low signup and because this was supposed to be our annual fund raiser, your Nutmeg board of directors, after giving this a lot of thought, has decided it’s best to cancel the barbecue. In scheduling this event, we tried to hit the sweet spot between end of school, youth athletic leagues, and summer vacations. Seems we missed, however, the board looks ahead to future ways for us all to share our common interests as Nutmeg Chapter members, and to raise funds in support of our monthly meetings, and our conservation and youth education missions.

The cancellation is disappointing to all of us, and at the same time your board of directors is already brainstorming possibilities for fun, free or inexpensive, local events to have, so we can connect with each other and celebrate what the Chapter’s accomplishing; for example what Nutmeg volunteers are doing with school kids in Trout in the Classroom, and our stream preservation efforts like our current work to rid the Mill River of invasive plants

And you’ll soon receive a very short survey asking for your opinions about our chapter’s local mission, and events, where we can come together, that you would like to see. — We need your good thinking!

So though our obligation to use Nutmeg Chapter funds prudently meant that canceling the barbecue was the right decision for now, it won’t slow us down! Look for that survey coming soon.

Thanks for now, and I hope to hear from you!
Best Regards,

Charles Petruccelli | President | Nutmeg Chapter Trout Unlimited

Nutmeg TU explores veterans service project

Nutmeg TU is looking for volunteers to help take veterans fishing.

National is launching TU’s Veterans Service Program, involving those who have served the country in conservation projects and fly fishing instruction.

Currently there is a program called Take a Vet Fishing at First Branford Congregational (www.firstcongregationalbranford.org/vets.html), led primarily by Hammonasset TU volunteers. That meets quite a distance from Fairfield County; they have so many vets go there for winter fly tying and for warmer-season fishing that they have a constant need of volunteers.

On Thursday, Feb/ 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, voluuntters from the Farmington Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be joined by volunteers from Candlewood Valley TU in the third floor conference room at the Newington Health Center of the Veterans Affairs, 555 Willard Ave.Newington, CT (860-666-6951). Anyone interested should contact Gian Morresi at 203-763-4015  or gmorresi@gmail.com.

Port 5 Naval Veterans, new home of Nutmeg TU meetings (see related story) takes blind veterans fishing once a year.
