Fly Fishing Western L.I. Sound with Capt. Gendron

Meeting at Port 5, 69 Brewster St, Bridgeport CT, 7 PM, and the pizza will be hot.

At the general meeting on Tuesday, October 20th, Captain Roger Gendron will be talking about his experiences and sharing knowledge on fishing the western Long Island Sound. Capt. Roger has been actively “guiding” the waters of Western Long Island Sound since 1989. As a local who has spent his entire life in this area, he started fly fishing the coast of Fairfield County Connecticut over 30 years ago, and was one of the first guides in the area to specialize in fly fishing and light tackle fishing in shallow salt water. He will spend some time with us on Tuesday targeting the coastline of Fairfield County.

As well as teaching his clients fishing and fly casting technique over the last twenty five seasons, he has also been an instructor of advanced navigation and seamanship at the American Marine Training school formerly based in Stratford, CT.

He continues to offer piloting and navigation instruction to boat owners and mariners new to the area. He speaks to various clubs and organizations on the topic of fly fishing and light tackle techniques during the off season.

Capt. Roger’s focus is on his clients’ enjoyment and safety, offering a fun day on the water whether fly fishing, light tackle fishing, or a little of each!

Fall Striper Fishing Tips with Jimmie O

Jimmy O of Jimmy O’s Bait & Tackle talk about fishing the Fall Striper run at the general meeting for the Nutmeg Chapter of Trout Unlimited Tuesday, September 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Port 5, 69 Brewster St., Bridgeport. The meeting will include hands-on demonstrations.

James Orifice, sole proprietor of Jimmy O’s Bait and Tackle in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport has been serving the marine industry for over 20 years. Chapter meeting, Tues, May 19, 2015, 7 PM, at Port 5, Bridgeport

Bill Closs will discuss his recent trip to Patagonia, Argentina, for our May meeting.

Bill Closs is a lifelong fly fisherman, with many fly fishing adventures and trips to all of the New England States, as well as, New York, Penn., Montana, Georgia, Florida, Alaska, Michigan, Quebec, Canada, Kamchatka, Russia, and Patagonia, Argentina, and Belize. Trips to the Amazon and Mongolia are scheduled for 2016. Many of these trips have been made by private plane that he flies for business and pleasure. Yes, he has even joined our Nutmeg TU group on our past outings to the Catskills.

He owns property 10 minutes from the Farmington River near Riverton, CT, and in Rangeley, Maine where he fly fishes extensively in both places.

The presentation on Patagonia is approx. 50 pictures of rafting, camping, and fishing the Alumine and Le Mas Rivers in Patagonia, Argentina. The base camp lodge for the fishing group is also a working cattle ranch.

Bill Closs is a fellow angler and his presentation will consist of a brief review of pictures and commentary, and then he will be open to questions and discussion.

Bring your questions! If you have ever wanted to fish outside of the US, this is an excellent opportunity to find out how you might accomplish this type of travel!

Aquarion official to describe natural resources

George S. Logan, director of Environmental Management and Government Relations for Aquarion Water Company, will discuss natural resources and the land management in terms of source protection and watershed management as it relates to Aquarion with Nutmeg TU Tuesday, Nov. 18.

The meeting will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Port 5, 69 Brewster St., Bridgeport. Pizza will be sold, and there will be a raffle.

Logan earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (1991) in Engineering from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and a Master of Science Degree (1995) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bridgeport. He has recently taken on the role of Director of Environmental Management and Government Relations for Aquarion Water Company (Aquarion) of Connecticut. He is responsible for leadership and support roles related to government relations and environmental functions related to sustainability programs, alternative energy programs as well as watershed maintenance, law enforcement, source protection, environmental compliance, natural resources management, and community outreach programs.

Prior to taking on this new position with Aquarion, Logan was responsible for leadership and support roles in all aspects of water utility engineering. In other previous roles with Aquarion, Logan was also responsible for supervision of Aquarion’s land survey, CAD drafting and design functions and was in charge of Corporate Purchasing for the entire Company.

Zambello to share tips on fishing New England’s seasons

Maine guide and author Lou Zambello will travel to Connecticut Tuesday, March 18, to discuss “Tactics to Successfully Fly Fish each of the Northern New England Seasons” at the next meeting of the Nutmeg Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Port 5 Naval Veterans, 69 Brewster St., in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport. Like all Nutmeg TU meetings, Zambello’s talk is open to the public.

Zambello recently published a book, “Flyfishing Northern New England’s Seasons,” available at amazon.com.

Zambello has fly fished northern New England for more than 30 years and has been a registered Maine Guide for over 10 years, guiding primarily in the Rangeley area.

He worked at LL Bean for more than 14 years and got the opportunity to fish with and learn from a number of fly fishing legends, such as Dave Whitlock and Dick Talleur.

He has traveled throughout the United States and the world to pursue his passion including Labrador, Newfoundland, Russia, the Bahamas, the Southeast U.S., Southwest U.S., Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and other destinations.

Lou writes a monthly column for the Maine Sportsman magazine and will soon appear in other fly fishing magazines.

He has several other book projects in the works including a how-to catch trophy brook trout book.

Lou has been fortunate enough to catch a number of salmonids exceeding 8 pounds, including brook trout, Atlantic salmon, brown trout, steelhead and rainbow trout.

Lou’s wife, Lindsey, and their three children all fly fish.
